Named after a nautical word that depicts the spray blown from the crests of waves, Spindrift Gallery is dedicated to supporting and showcasing Atlantic Canadian artists and heritage.
The very definition of spindrift lends itself beautifully to Peggy’s Cove’s dramatic history of storms and the building that houses the gallery. It sits on a parcel of land purchased in the 1970s by John Beale when he acquired two lots in the heart of the village. The land also included the original Peggy’s Cove Schoolhouse (built in 1839) and a house which ultimately served as the Beale family home.
Spindrift Gallery was once the site of an old barn. Damaged multiple times by storms, it was propped up after Hurricane Juan in 2003 then damaged beyond repair in 2007 by Post-tropical Storm Noel. In 2009, a new building was constructed (and survived!) Hurricane Bill, which roared through the community that same year. For the Beale family, this new structure served as a stock room for their retail store, Beale’s Bailiwick, as well as a maintenance building.
In 2021, the Beale properties were acquired by Six by the Sea. The building where Spindrift now resides was fully renovated throughout to create a gallery on the main floor and a loft space upstairs to accommodate artists-in-residence.
For over 100 years, the picturesque landscapes, beautiful rugged coastline, and authentic residential fishing life of Peggy’s Cove have inspired the work of artists and photographers. Spindrift Gallery is honoured to continue this tradition by showcasing contemporary Atlantic Canadian artists and hosting heritage-based exhibits that share the history and culture of Peggy’s Cove and the surrounding region.
